Hoping University Scholarships
Lebanon
In Lebanon it is nearly impossible for Palestinian refugees to receive a higher education. At present some school graduates attend one of the UNRWA two-year technical schools. As a result of the findings that emerged from workshops Hoping sponsored, where young people were asked to identify their most urgent priorities, Hoping has provided 12 university scholarships for young Palestinians in Lebanon. This is the second consecutive year that the Hoping scholarships have been awarded. They fund the student’s entire tuition over the two years and allows them to obtain a BA degree after their UNRWA technical degree. This qualification will vastly improve their chances of gaining future employment and will in turn enable them to support their families. The scholarships have been awarded by a local Hoping committee established to ensure both the academic grades and the economic situation of the students are taken into account, and to identify those who will most benefit from the scholarship scheme. An equal number of young women and young men were recipients of this year’s scholarships.
